2026 Pet Supplement Supplier Selection Guide: A 12-Point Scorecard

快速回答

Score each supplier 0–2 on twelve points: matching legal entity, GMP certificate with scope, GFSI directory listing, FDA registration stated as a registration, a real finished-product COA, MOQ in units, sample lead time, conditional lead time, dosage-form proof, a named formulation signatory, Incoterms with landed cost, and refusal to print disease claims. Visit anyone scoring 18 or more.

2026 Pet Supplement Supplier Selection Guide: A 12-Point Scorecard

Most supplier shortlists in this category are built from three things: a listing on a trade platform, a certificate JPEG, and a quoted MOQ. In 2026 all three are easy to fake and easy to misread. This guide is the desk check we would run on ourselves before agreeing to a factory visit.

I run the plant at Shenzhen Enbeichong and I sit on the other side of vendor qualification audits. The pattern I see is buyers spending two days on site checking things a twenty-minute desk review would have settled, and then not asking the two questions that actually decide whether a first purchase order ships on time.

How is this different from a factory audit checklist?

An audit checklist is for the visit. It assumes you already decided this plant is worth a flight. We published that one separately: how to audit a pet supplement factory.

This scorecard is the round before that. It runs on documents, public registers and one email exchange. Twelve points, each scored 0, 1 or 2. Twenty-four is the maximum. It takes about an hour per supplier if the supplier answers.

Score it yourself. Do not ask the factory to fill it in.

The 12-point supplier scorecard

#What to check2 points looks like0 points looks like
1Legal entityThe same legal name on the certificate PDF, the quotation, the business registration record and the proforma invoiceThree different names across the documents, or a trading company presenting a factory's certificate
2GMP evidenceA certificate with issuer, audit date, score, expiry and a scope that says pet food or pet supplements"GMP certified" in a banner with no PDF, or a human-food GMP scope
3GFSI schemeSQF, BRCGS or FSSC 22000 with a live directory listing you find yourselfA logo only, or a certificate that expired last year
4FDA statusA food facility registration number, described as a registration"FDA approved" or "FDA certified" anywhere on the site
5Certificate of analysisA real batch COA showing assay of the declared actives, micro and heavy metals, with the lab namedA "COA" that is a one-line pass/fail, or refusal to share one before a PO
6MOQ definitionMOQ stated in units on the quotation, with the pack size next to itMOQ quoted verbally, or in "bottles" that turn out to be inner cartons
7SamplingSample lead time in days, and confirmation the sample comes off the production line, not a benchA sample that arrives in a different matrix or piece weight from what will be produced
8Lead timeA window with its conditions: "8 to 14 weeks after artwork approval"A single number with no dependency, or no number
9Dosage form proofVideo or a live call showing the line for your form: extrusion for chews, filling for dropsStock photography, or a chew factory promising liquids "through a partner"
10Formulation authorityA named person who signs the specification and can answer an inclusion-level question"Our R&D team" with no name, or a sales contact reading from a brochure
11Export termsIncoterm named on the quotation (EXW, FOB, CIF or DDP) and a landed-cost estimate on requestPrice with no Incoterm, or DDP promised without asking who the importer of record is
12Claims disciplineThe factory refuses to print disease claims and says so before you askWillingness to print "treats arthritis" or "FDA approved" on your carton

Points 1 to 5 are verification. Points 6 to 9 are whether the quote is real. Points 10 to 12 are whether the factory will protect your listing after the order ships.

How to score the total

  • 18 to 24: worth a visit or a paid pre-shipment inspection. Move to the audit checklist.
  • 12 to 17: ask for the missing documents in one email. If the gaps are 6, 8 or 11, they close in a day. If the gaps are 1, 2 or 5, they usually do not.
  • Under 12: stop. Cheap quotes from suppliers under 12 cost more by month six.

A perfect 24 is rare and should make you look harder, not less hard. A plant that scores 2 on every line either has a very good sales team or is describing a plant they do not own.

Where China plants usually lose points

I will be direct about my own side of the industry.

Point 1. Certificates issued to one legal entity, a website presenting another, invoices from a third. Sometimes that is a genuine group structure. Sometimes it is a trading desk with a borrowed certificate. Either way you should be able to draw the line between the names on paper before you pay a deposit. If a supplier cannot explain its own entity chain in one paragraph, that is your answer.

Point 5. Many plants will send a document titled Certificate of Analysis that lists appearance, odour and moisture and nothing else. That is not a COA for a supplement. Ask for assay of the named actives. If the answer is "we test the raw material", ask for the finished-product number anyway. We wrote a separate guide to reading a pet supplement COA.

Point 12. Some factories will print anything. That is not a service. It is the fastest way to lose an Amazon listing or a UK retail account.

Where US and EU plants usually lose points

Point 6. Domestic plants often start at 5,000 or 10,000 units. That is not wrong; it is their cost structure. It is a bad fit for a first test SKU.

Point 8. Lead times quoted as "we'll see after the formula is finalised" are as unhelpful in Ohio as in Guangdong.

Point 11. A domestic plant does not usually think about export. If your channel is a second market in year two, the export file set becomes your problem. We wrote about the trade-offs in China vs USA pet supplement manufacturer.

What a buyer should ask in the first email

One message, six lines. Send it to every shortlisted plant on the same day and compare the replies, not the brochures.

  1. Please attach your current GMP and GFSI certificates as PDF, and tell me where to verify them online.
  2. Please attach a finished-product COA from any recent batch of a soft chew, with the lab named.
  3. What is your MOQ in units for a stock formula in a 200 g jar, and what is the sample lead time in days?
  4. Who signs your product specifications? May I ask that person one formulation question on a call?
  5. Which Incoterms do you quote on, and can you estimate landed cost to my port for 500 units?
  6. Will you print "helps treat arthritis" on my label? (The correct answer is no.)

The plant that answers all six within two business days with attachments is your first visit.

How we would score ourselves

Buyers ask, so here is where we stand as of September 2026, with the places we would lose a point.

  • Points 2 and 3: Eurofins GMP audit recognition and SQF Food Safety Code Edition 9 for pet food manufacturing, both with PDF and directory entries on the quality page. Score 2 and 2.
  • Point 4: FDA food facility registration number published, described as a registration. Score 2.
  • Point 6: stock soft chews from 500 units, written on the quotation in units. Score 2.
  • Point 7: catalogue samples typically 7 to 15 days, off the production line. Score 2.
  • Point 8: first branded run typically 8 to 14 weeks after artwork approval. Score 2.
  • Point 9: the soft-chew line, blending and filling are on video at /videos/factory-tour. Liquids run on our own filling line. Score 2.
  • Point 10: specifications carry a name. Formulation questions go to our technical advisor. Score 2.
  • Where we lose points: we are a single-shift plant with 20 lines, so very large volume allocation is confirmed per quotation rather than promised on the website. We do not hold the NASC seal, which some US retailers ask for. Buyers who need either should ask early.

If your scorecard for us comes out differently, tell us. The inquiry form goes to the people who can answer, not to a chatbot.

常见问题

What is the fastest way to verify a pet supplement manufacturer's GMP or SQF certificate?
Ask for the PDF, then find the listing yourself: SQF certificates are in the SQFI public directory, Eurofins GMP recognitions are on the Eurofins listings site. Check that the legal name, site address, scope and expiry on the listing match the PDF and the quotation.
Is 'FDA certified' a real status for a pet supplement factory?
No. The FDA registers food facilities; it does not certify or approve them. A factory should give you its food facility registration number and call it a registration. 'FDA approved' or 'FDA certified' on a factory website is a zero on the scorecard.
What MOQ should a first pet supplement order have?
Enough to test the listing, not a year of stock. Stock soft chews at Beno start at 500 units, written on the quotation in units with the pack size beside it. Ask every supplier whether their MOQ is units or bottles before comparing prices.
How should I score a pet supplement supplier shortlist?
Score twelve points 0, 1 or 2 for a maximum of 24, and score it yourself rather than asking the factory to fill it in. Eighteen or more earns a visit or a paid pre-shipment inspection. Twelve to seventeen means one email for the missing documents. Under twelve, stop.
What should a buyer ask in the first email to a pet supplement factory?
One message, six lines, sent to every shortlisted plant on the same day: current GMP and GFSI certificates as PDF with a way to verify them, a finished-product COA with the lab named, MOQ in units and sample lead time in days, who signs specifications, which Incoterms you quote on, and whether they would print a disease claim.
Where do US and EU pet supplement plants usually lose points?
Mostly on MOQ, lead time and export terms. Domestic plants often start at 5,000 or 10,000 units, which is their cost structure rather than a fault, but a bad fit for a first test SKU. Lead times quoted as we will see after the formula is finalised are unhelpful anywhere, and a domestic plant does not usually think about export.
