How to read a pet supplement COA before the first purchase order

A certificate of analysis is the piece of paper that says this batch, not the brochure, was tested. Matchwell's treat-factory audit list spends a lot of time on documents. Gensei and Hanyun wave "COA, MSDS, ISO" in the same sentence. Those are different files. This page is only the COA, and only how a pet-supplement buyer should read one before a first 500-unit PO.

I will use the kind of COA we issue from Shenzhen Enbeichong. Other labs use other templates. The questions stay the same.

Match the names first

The legal name on the COA should be the legal name on the commercial invoice and on the GMP or SQF PDF. Ours is Shenzhen Enbeichong Co., Ltd. If the COA says Factory A and the invoice says Trading Co. B, you do not have a manufacturing document. You have a collage.

Batch number on the bag should be the same family of code as the COA. A pretty sticker that says "SAMPLE" is not a production lot.

Product name and dosage form should match what you bought. A human gummy COA from another city is not evidence for a dog chew.

What the rows usually mean

Templates vary. You are looking for whether the plant actually measured something relevant to this form.

Identity / description. Does this look like the chew or powder you ordered, including colour and odour. Subjective, but a "dark brown meat chew" vs a yellow tablet is a stop.

Assay / actives. Glucosamine, a vitamin, a named oil. Units matter (mg/piece vs mg/g). If the spec is "NLT" (not less than), read the number. If the method is missing, ask. A row that says "proprietary blend 500 mg" with no split is not an assay.

Microbiology. Total plate count, yeast and mould, Salmonella, E. coli as the plant's panel defines them. Animal food still has to be safe. FDA's animal food pages are the US starting point: fda.gov/animal-veterinary/animal-food-feeds.

Metals. Lead, arsenic, cadmium, mercury appear on many export packs. Limits depend on the market and the matrix. "Heavy metals: pass" with no numbers is a weak row. Ask for the numbers.

Moisture or water activity on a chew. If this row is missing on a soft chew, ask why. Moisture is how pieces spoil and how probiotics die.

What is not on a standard COA: your Amazon A-plus copy, NASC membership, or a clinical trial. NASC is a US industry programme for companies that sell animal supplements (nasc.cc). It is not a Chinese factory licence and it is not a substitute for a batch test.

Dates, specs and "pass"

A COA without a test date is a poster. Manufacture date and expiry on the pack should be reconcilable with the report.

"Pass" against an internal spec is only useful if you have seen the spec. Ask for the specification sheet that the COA is scored against. If they will not send it, you are buying a vibe.

Out-of-spec batches happen. A serious plant quarantines and writes a deviation. A plant that never has an OOS has never tested or never told you.

Sample COA vs production COA

Before you place the first order, ask for a sample COA from a similar format. You want to see the layout. After the first GMP batch, you want that batch's COA. Do not accept last year's file for this year's lot.

If the sample COA looks like a document you could hand to an importer, keep going. If it looks like a marketing PDF with a logo and no batch, stop. Send the format you want tested through the inquiry form.
