China vs USA pet supplement manufacturer: landed cost, NASC, MOQ

China vs USA pet supplement manufacturer is usually a fight between two sales decks. A US plant says importing is risk. A China plant says the unit cost is the whole story. Both leave out the number that actually decides the first PO: landed cost for the units you can sell this quarter, with documents your importer can defend.

What the two quotes are really selling

A typical US pet-supplement contract manufacturer sells NASC-shaped process, domestic restock, and a higher MOQ. Public US pages still talk in thousands of units, not a 500-piece test. NASC is a voluntary US industry programme for companies that sell animal supplements. It is not a certificate we print in Shenzhen and it is not a substitute for your own US regulatory file. A typical China OEM sells a lower unit price, a lower first-order quantity on stock chews, and an export pack. Landed cost beats factory-gate screenshots

A cheap EXW chew is not a price. Add freight, duty, importer of record, labelling, and the months of cash sitting on the water. FOB, CIF and DDP are different invoices. If the WhatsApp quote is silent on Incoterm, it is not comparable to a US plant's delivered case cost.

China wins when the formula is already on a catalogue line, you need a few hundred to a few thousand units to test Amazon or a regional chain, and you can wait on ocean or pay for air on the sample. The US plant wins when you need a restock in days, a NASC seal on your company, or a buyer who will not take a China country of origin.

Many brands do the first ASIN in China at 500 units, then argue about US dual-source after the listing converts. That is a plan. Dual-source on day one of a 500-unit test is how you pay two MOQs for one lesson.

Claims and labels do not move with the factory address

If your buyer demands a US-made sticker, do not brief a Guangdong plant to "sound American". Print the origin you have. Country of origin lies fail at customs and at Amazon in the same month.

A practical split

Use China OEM when: stock formula, 500-unit chew test, documents (COA, invoice, packing list) in the manufacturing name, and you named the destination market in the first email.

Use a US manufacturer when: the channel contract says so, you need NASC on the brand, or the SKU must restock inside a domestic lead time you cannot buy with air freight.

Use both later, not as a confused first RFQ.
