The briefs that stall are polite and empty: "We want a joint supplement, private label, please send catalogue and price."

That message cannot produce a number. Human-supplement RFQ templates on the open web ask for ten or eleven fields, including overage and excipient load. A first pet-supplement email does not need a master batch record. It needs five facts a plant can route to stock or ODM.

Price moves with format, pack, tests and Incoterm. MOQ moves with stock vs custom, and with unit vs bottle. Destination market decides the label. Put those in the first email, or the same fields on the inquiry form.

The five facts that unlock a quote

Species and benefit. Dog or cat. Joint, probiotic, skin, calming, or something we can map to a SKU. We will not guess. "Pet health" is not a SKU.

Dosage form. Soft chew, powder, tablet, paste, oil, drops. If you do not know, say the channel. Marketplace treat-like SKUs are usually chews. See format comparison.

Destination market. US, EU, UK, Japan, China, or a list. This is labelling, claims language and which documents ride with the shipment. It is not trivia.

Volume band. "About 2,000 to test, 10,000 if it sells" is enough. That is how we put you on the 500-unit stock track or tell you it is ODM. A fake "100,000 next month" does not get a better price. It gets a sceptical scheduler.

Pack type. Pouch, bottle, jar, or "match the catalogue SKU." Artwork can follow. Pack type cannot, because it is the quote.

Optional, if counsel already cleared it: the claim you must print. Optional, if you already picked one: the catalogue SKU name.

What we do with each field

Species and benefit maps you to a stock SKU or to ODM. Format picks the line. Market picks the label language and which documents travel. Volume band picks the 500-unit stock track vs a "this is custom" reply. Pack type is the quote. If you skip market, we cannot flag a melatonin problem on a calming chew or a zinc cap on a coat SKU. If you skip pack, any unit price is a guess.

Calming, cat, joint and gut each have their own traps. Short versions: calming chews, cat line, joint chews.

If you are bringing a proprietary formula, say so, and send the full recipe after NDA. A factory that refuses to sign an NDA before a full formula is telling you something. A buyer who dumps a secret recipe into an unsolicited email is telling the factory something else.

A filled example, and a bad one

Works:

Company: North Shore Pets LLC, Oregon. Dog joint support, soft chew, United States, Amazon. First run about 500, 12-month band 8,000 if it sells. Pack: pouch, match catalogue if you have a joint chew. Sample first: yes. Incoterm: FOB, we will name the forwarder later.

That can be routed to a stock SKU, a sample date, and a quote with a hole only for the exact pouch spec.

Does not work:

Hi, we are a new brand, very interested in OEM/ODM/private label, all dosage forms, exclusive formula, please send full catalogue, certificates, and your best price CIF.

That message asks for four commercial models, exclusivity, a price without a product, and freight to an unnamed port. It will get a brochure. It will not get a number you can take to a buyer.

FOB, CIF and DDP change who buys freight insurance and who files entry. If you do not know yet, write "propose Incoterm" rather than demanding a door-to-door number from a plant that has not seen your broker.

Subject: OEM brief — [species] [format] — [country] — [volume band]

  • Company:
  • Website (if any):
  • Species / benefit:
  • Format:
  • Market (and channel: Amazon / retail / clinic / distributor):
  • Volume band (first run, and 12 months if you know it):
  • Pack (pouch / bottle / jar / match catalogue):
  • Need sample first? yes/no
  • Catalogue SKU if already picked:
  • Incoterm preference if you have one (otherwise we will propose):

Send that. Do not attach a 20-page brand deck first.

What you get back in one business day

On a complete brief we reply with: stock match or "this is ODM"; sampling window (7–15 days stock); planning MOQ (500 units on stock chews, confirmed in the quote); the questions still blocking a firm unit price (usually pack and Incoterm).

We work China time (UTC+8). US and EU mail typically gets an answer the next morning your time.

A complete brief also lets you compare two factories. Quotes built on different inputs are not comparable. That is why professional RFQ guides insist on the same fields to every plant.

What to skip in email one

Do not ask for "all certificates" as a first line. Ask for GMP, SQF and a sample COA, or open certificates. Do not request a factory-gate price without an Incoterm. Do not promise exclusivity in the subject line. Do not send five flavour variants before you have a market.

If you already picked a SKU, put the name in the subject. That is the fastest brief we get.

Process context: OEM guide. File check: vet a China OEM. First commercial run: private label from 500 units.

After the quote, the next human delay is usually artwork and payment terms, not the mixer. Approve the sample, lock the pack, then ask for the production slot. If you reopen flavour after the quote, you are in a new brief.

Start the brief on the form or contact.

Questions fréquentes

What information does a pet supplement factory need to quote?
Species, dosage form, destination market, a volume band and pack type. Claims you want on the label help. Without those, you get a catalogue link, not a price and sampling date.
How soon will I get a reply to an OEM brief?
Qualified briefs with a company name and a real project are answered within one business day, China time. US and EU senders usually see a reply the next morning locally.
Can I get a unit price with only a product idea?
You can get a planning range from the catalogue. A purchase-ready unit price needs pack, tests, volume and Incoterm. Send the five facts above so the first reply already includes MOQ and a sampling window.
