Dog Joint Supplement Market 2026–2030: A Country-by-Country Forecast

Quick answer

Joint-only reports size the 2025 dog joint supplement market between USD 1.1 and 2.1 billion, growing about 6% a year to 2035; the whole pet supplement category sits at USD 2.4–3.1 billion. The US is largest, Asia-Pacific fastest. Use the CAGR to sanity-check a sales plan, never to size a first PO: start at 500 units and let the second order set the volume.

Dog Joint Supplement Market 2026–2030: A Country-by-Country Forecast

Every market report on pet joint supplements has a different number for the same market. That is not a reason to ignore them. It is a reason to read them the way a factory reads them: as a direction for which dosage form and which claim regime to prepare for, never as a number of units to put on a purchase order.

I run the export and operations side at Shenzhen Enbeichong. Buyers send us these reports attached to a brief. Below is how I read the same reports for the five markets where our joint SKUs actually ship, with each figure cited so you can check it, and the first-order decision it changes.

How big is the dog joint supplement category, and why do the numbers disagree?

Two joint-only reports differ by almost 2x on the same year. The gap is scope: whether cats are in, whether veterinary-channel products are in, whether functional treats count. None of the reports publish their unit counts, so none of them can tell you how many jars a country buys.

What the reports agree on is more useful than the totals. Dogs are around three quarters of the joint category. Glucosamine and chondroitin are the largest ingredient group. Soft chews are the largest format: Fact.MR puts chews at 61% of the dog joint segment, FMI at 48% across all pets. North America is the largest region in every report and Asia-Pacific the fastest growing in every report.

Use the CAGR as a sanity check on your own sales plan. If your year-two plan assumes 40% growth in a category the whole industry forecasts at 6%, the growth has to come from share, and share comes from listing quality and reorder rate, not from a bigger first PO.

United States: the biggest market and the strictest listing rules

The American Pet Products Association reported total US pet spending of USD 158 billion in 2025, up 3.7%, with a projection of USD 165 billion for 2026 and USD 197.9 billion by 2030. The supplies, live animal and over-the-counter medicine category, which is where supplements sit in APPA's structure, reached USD 34.4 billion and grew faster than the total at 4.4%.

Dog ownership reached 53% of US households, about 71 million homes. APPA's 2025 Dog & Cat Report found 53% of dog owners giving supplements, and joint and mobility the most common type at 43%. Fact.MR gives the US the highest country CAGR in its joint report at 7.1%.

What that changes in the brief:

  • Soft chew first. The category is a chew category in the US and the listing photo is a chew photo.
  • Claims are a drug question at FDA's Center for Veterinary Medicine before they are a marketing question. "Supports mobility" survives. "Treats arthritis" does not. We wrote the details in does the FDA regulate pet supplements.
  • Amazon is a channel with its own rules, covered in Amazon private label pet supplements.
  • First PO: a 500-unit stock chew is a test inbound, not a year of inventory. Plan the second PO before the first lands.

United Kingdom: Europe's largest dog population, its own feed law

FEDIAF's Facts & Figures put the UK dog population at 11.7 million, the largest in Europe. Fact.MR gives the UK a 5.7% CAGR for dog joint supplements; FMI gives it 6.9%, the highest in its country table. The two reports disagree on the rate and agree on the direction.

What that changes in the brief:

  • The UK left EU feed law but kept most of its structure. A joint chew is a complementary feed and its label has to read like one. We cover the wording in China to UK pet feed claims.
  • UK buyers ask about chondroitin origin. Ours is bovine, not shark, and that is on the specification.
  • Retail accounts increasingly want a GFSI certificate, not only GMP. Our SQF Edition 9 scope is pet food manufacturing.
  • First PO: 500 to 1,000 units is normal for a UK online launch. Ship FOB and let a UK forwarder handle post-Brexit import declarations, unless you already have an importer.

Germany and the EU: documentation first, then volume

FEDIAF counts 10.5 million dogs in Germany and 15.7 million cats, the largest cat population in Europe. Fact.MR gives Germany 6.2% and France 5.9% for dog joint supplements. One hip-and-joint report attributes about 26% of global category revenue to Europe, with Germany, the UK, France and the Netherlands making up most of it.

What that changes in the brief:

  • Regulation (EC) No 767/2009 governs feed labelling. Feed materials and additives have to be declared in the EU way. That affects your label before it affects your formula.
  • German buyers read specifications. Expect questions on inclusion levels, on the source of every animal-origin ingredient and on the analytical method behind the COA.
  • Multi-country labels are common. Print space becomes the constraint, which argues for one jar size and a QR code to the full declaration.
  • First PO: German distributors more often start at 1,000 to 2,000 units because they are supplying retail, not a single web shop. Quote DAP or DDP only after the importer of record and VAT registration are agreed.

Japan: an ageing small-dog population

The Japan Pet Food Association counted about 7.1 million pet dogs in 2025. Fortune Business Insights projects the Japanese pet supplement market at roughly USD 0.17 billion by 2026. Fact.MR gives Japan a 5.1% CAGR for dog joint supplements, FMI 6.2%, both attributing growth to an ageing dog population and a strong preference for premium care.

What that changes in the brief:

  • Piece weight. Japanese dogs are predominantly small breeds. A 2 g chew at one piece a day for dogs up to 11 kg is the right unit; a 6 g piece for a Labrador is not.
  • Packaging quality is inspected as closely as the product. Resealable pouches and jar finish matter more than in any other market on this list.
  • Ingredient documentation in English is acceptable at the importer level; the consumer label will be rewritten in Japanese by your partner.
  • First PO: 500 units is a realistic first order. Japanese importers reorder on schedule if the first batch is flawless and stop if it is not.

Australia: small market, strict border

Animal Medicines Australia reports 73% of Australian households owning a pet, 31.6 million animals and AUD 21.3 billion in annual pet spending. Mordor Intelligence sizes Australian pet nutraceuticals at USD 28.4 million in 2025, growing to USD 56.4 million by 2031, a 12.8% CAGR, with dog products dominating.

What that changes in the brief:

  • The absolute market is small. Australia is a good second market for a brand already selling elsewhere, not usually a first.
  • Animal-origin actives are subject to Australian import conditions. Green-lipped mussel, fish oil, bovine chondroitin and crustacean glucosamine each need to be checked against the current import conditions before the formula is locked, not after the batch is made.
  • Therapeutic claims are regulated separately. Keep the label on daily support.
  • First PO: quote FOB and let an Australian importer with existing permits bring it in.

How we read forecasts at the factory

We do not size a production slot on a CAGR. We size it on the buyer's second order. A first order of 500 chews tells us nothing about a market; a second order eight weeks later tells us everything.

If you are building a plan from one of the reports above, bring the report and the channel. We will tell you which stock SKU fits and what the export file set looks like for that country. The hip and joint mobility chew is the usual starting point; the formula comparison explains what is in it. Send the brief through the inquiry form with the destination market on the first line.

Frequently asked questions

How big is the dog joint supplement market in 2026?
Fact.MR values dog joint supplements at USD 1.1 billion in 2025 growing to USD 2.0 billion by 2035; Future Market Insights values all pet joint supplements at USD 2.1 billion with dogs at 78%. The gap is scope, not error. Both forecast roughly 6% annual growth.
Which country is the best first market for a dog joint chew?
The United States by size: USD 158 billion total pet spending in 2025 per APPA, 71 million dog households and 43% of dog owners using joint supplements. It also has the strictest listing rules on disease claims, so write the label for FDA CVM and AAFCO wording from day one.
How many units should a first joint supplement order be?
For a US or UK online launch, a 500-unit stock chew is a test inbound. German distributors more often start at 1,000–2,000 units because they supply retail. Japan and Australia are usually 500-unit first orders through an importer. Plan the second PO before the first lands.
Which dosage form leads the dog joint supplement category?
Soft chews. Fact.MR puts chews at 61% of the dog joint segment and Future Market Insights at 48% across all pets. Glucosamine and chondroitin are the largest ingredient group, dogs are around three quarters of the joint category, and North America is the largest region in every report.
What should change in the brief for the Japanese market?
Piece weight first. Japanese dogs are predominantly small breeds, so a 2 g chew at one piece a day for dogs up to 11 kg is the right unit and a 6 g piece for a Labrador is not. Packaging quality is inspected as closely as the product, and 500 units is a realistic first order.
Is Australia a good first market for a dog joint chew?
Usually not. Mordor Intelligence sizes Australian pet nutraceuticals at USD 28.4 million in 2025, so the absolute market is small and it suits a brand already selling elsewhere. Animal-origin actives such as green-lipped mussel, fish oil, bovine chondroitin and crustacean glucosamine each need checking against current import conditions before the formula is locked.
