Dog Joint Supplement Formulas Compared: Chew vs Tablet vs Drops

Buyers compare joint supplements by the words on the front panel. A formulator compares them by the milligrams on the specification sheet and by what the dosage form can physically carry. This article puts four of our stock joint SKUs side by side on the second basis, and explains the decisions behind the numbers.

If a competitor's panel gives a total for a "proprietary joint blend" without splitting it, you cannot make this comparison, and that is worth knowing in itself.

The tablet and the drops are listed as "set per order" because those two SKUs are built to take the buyer's active levels. The blank bottle is the point of the tablet. The drops run a custom panel on the same filling line.

Why is MSM the largest number in the joint chew?

Three reasons, and none of them is marketing.

First, tolerance in the matrix. Glucosamine at high inclusion makes a soft chew dusty and bitter; the flavour system has to fight it. MSM is far easier to carry at 125 mg in a 2 g piece without the palatability penalty, which matters because a chew the dog refuses on day three delivers zero milligrams of anything.

Second, cost per milligram. MSM is inexpensive. Loading the piece with it does not move the quotation the way loading it with green-lipped mussel would.

Third, the pairing. The 50 mg glucosamine and 50 mg chondroitin sulfate are the pair every veterinary formula is built on, at a ratio that matches them. MSM sits over the top as the bulk sulfur donor.

What this is not: a substitute for a high-dose clinical tablet. Veterinary glucosamine tablets routinely carry several hundred milligrams per tablet. A 2 g chew cannot, which is why the chew doses by pieces per bodyweight rather than by one large piece.

What does a dog actually receive per day?

Per-piece numbers mislead when the feeding table changes the count. From the current feeding directions for the Hip & Joint chew:

A 200 g jar lasts a small dog 100 days and a Labrador 33 days. Cost per day to the owner, not cost per jar to the brand, is what decides the reorder. Allow four to six weeks of daily feeding before judging effect; the pack says so.

What do the green-lipped mussel and fish oil at 50 mg each represent?

They are the reason the chew is cold-formed. Green-lipped mussel loses activity under heat; a baked piece would carry the ingredient name and not the ingredient. The fish oil is held at 50 mg deliberately, low enough to manage oxidation inside a joint stack, with vitamin E at 5 mg as part of that control. If a brief wants a full omega-3 dose, that belongs in a separate skin-and-coat SKU or an oil, not in the mobility chew.

Chondroitin is bovine, not shark. EU and UK buyers ask, and the answer is on the specification.

When is the multivitamin's joint trio enough?

The 8-in-1 carries 40 mg glucosamine, 20 mg MSM and 14 mg chondroitin: 74 mg of joint actives against 380 mg. That is a maintenance inclusion inside a general daily product. It is honest to say "joint support included" on a multivitamin. It is not honest to market the 8-in-1 as a mobility product, and we will not print it that way.

The commercial use of the multivitamin trio is different: it is the second SKU that keeps a customer who bought the joint chew, or the first SKU for a brand whose channel wants one jar that does everything.

When does the tablet win?

When the buyer is a clinic, a pharmacy, or a market where a tablet is what the shopper expects a joint supplement to look like. A pressed tablet carries more active per unit than a 2 g chew, and it can be scored. The trade-off is compliance: a tablet is a daily negotiation with the dog, a chew is a treat.

The blank bottle means no third-party brand to remove. Glucosamine and chondroitin levels are agreed with our team before the run, so a clinic can specify rather than resell.

Why do cats get a liquid?

Because a cat will not take a tablet twice, and a chew flavoured for dogs is not a cat product. Most cats over ten have some joint discomfort and almost every joint product is built for dogs; the gap is real and the drops sit in it.

Dosing is 0.5 ml daily for cats up to 4.5 kg, 1 ml to 11 kg, on food or direct. The active panel is set per order, and the MOQ for this liquid is 200 bottles, low for a filled dropper. Palatability decides everything in this SKU: a glucosamine level that is fine in a dog chew can be too bitter for a cat liquid, which is a formulation conversation, not a label one.

How should a buyer read a competitor's panel against this table?

• Per piece or per serving? A "per 2 chews" panel halves in the comparison.
• Is the total a blend? A 500 mg "joint blend" with no split may be 400 mg of MSM and very little else.
• Is the source stated? Chondroitin without an origin, glucosamine without HCl or sulfate, mussel without a species.

Which one should a brand launch first?

• One SKU, one species, marketplace or web shop: the Hip & Joint chew. It is the category's photograph.
• A range that needs a daily habit plus a mobility line: chew first, 8-in-1 second.
• Clinic or pharmacy channel, or a market that expects tablets: the tablet, with levels specified to your protocol.
• A cat brand, or a dog brand adding cats: the drops.
